I've been a pretty regular reader of the Realmserver forums lately. There's been a lot of grumbling and hard feelings and nasty comments and finger pointing. Kinda gets you down about the game. A few posts got me to thinking about what it felt like to be a brand new player to the game. Four years ago, when I didn't know anyone, didn't own anything, and didn't understand about chants and potions and stats.

One comment was about Realm originally being made with a level 100 cap, and how all the chants and bonus/magic items in the game were there to try and compensate for getting you through the added upper levels. I started wondering just how hard it was to level a toon with just the stuff you could afford or find. I started thinking about Aggi being a brand new toon. I couldn't bear to remake my only 1k, so I decided to go to the Test server and, well, test.

I made an Aggi adventuress over there several years ago when rumors ran rampant about a wipe on Main. I had only played her a few times (runs through HC for money and a few items), so she was just a lowly level 2 with about 80k, an orb of healing, a PoI and possibly a BoS. No chants. No other toons to borrow items from. Hardly anyone to beg a chant off of. Aggi was . . . completely on her own.

And let me tell you, without any chants, those low level monsters are HARD! I got her up to level 7, struggling to kill monsters north of Leinster. Such wonderful challenges! How strange to be upset over losing an unchanted mythril long sword! It felt like a different Realm, and was actually kind of fun.
Don't worry, channel 1. I'll not abandon you - but I will skip over to Test to see how far I can get!
